One rule set, applied consistently.

Format, dimensions, quality and destination stay the same across the export. ICO output is sized by its embedded icon sizes, so the general resize control does not apply to it.

Targeting a file size searches quality values to fit it: JPEG, WebP, AVIF only, up to 8 attempts, down to a floor of quality 10. If even that overshoots it saves the smallest result and says so.

Will PixelFerry open my file?

PixelFerry reads 23 format families covering 76 file extensions, and writes 8. The full matrix says which are macOS-only and which are read but never written.

Those are the formats PixelFerry writes. Writing HEIC / HEIF needs macOS. Everything else it reads, including SVG, PSD, PDF and camera RAW, converts one way only.

Quality 1–100 for JPEG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC / HEIF. PNG uses lossless compression and PixelFerry writes TIFF with lossless LZW; GIF is a 256-colour palette. All output is 8-bit per channel.

Does PixelFerry upload my images?
No. Every conversion runs on your Mac. HEIC and the macOS-only formats (camera RAW, EXR, BMP, TGA, JPEG XL and the rest) decode through the macOS system codecs, PSD and PDF through bundled decoders; everything else through the bundled image pipeline. No file, and no part of one, is sent anywhere.
Which macOS versions does it run on?
macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later, on Apple silicon and Intel. Only a macOS build target is declared. Cross-platform code paths exist and are unit-tested, but no Windows or Linux build is produced or signed by this project, so neither is offered.
What can it convert to?
JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC / HEIF, AVIF, TIFF, GIF, ICO. Writing HEIC / HEIF needs macOS, because that encode goes through the system sips tool; the rest work wherever the app runs. SVG, PSD, PDF and camera RAW are read but never written, along with the specialist formats listed on the formats page.
What happens to a multi-page PDF?
Each page becomes its own image, in a folder named after the document. Long documents stop at the first 100 pages, because rendering is held in memory, and the conversion tells you it stopped rather than truncating silently.
Are my originals modified?
Never. Output is written as new files, and it will not overwrite the source or an existing file. A colliding name gets a `_converted` suffix.
Is metadata kept?
Metadata removal is on by default: EXIF, XMP and IPTC are stripped, while the ICC colour profile is kept either way on most formats, so a Display P3 photo stays Display P3. There are exceptions at both ends: PSD and PDF decode to bare pixels, so no source profile survives, and ICO output is built through its own encoder that keeps no profile at all. Removing your location does not silently reinterpret your colours. HEIC output follows the same metadata policy as every other format, but the system sips tool writes a small EXIF block of its own, so a HEIC is never completely EXIF-free.
When can I use it?
PixelFerry is in private beta. Joining the waitlist is how you get an invite when the next round opens; there is no public download yet.
